An award-winning business owner and sustainability trailblazer, Nicole Broad is redefining fashion with creativity, conscience, and craftsmanship. As the founder of The Fruit Moth, a Manchester-based sustainable fashion brand, she is turning the fast fashion model on its head, creating timeless pieces designed to be cherished for a lifetime.
Nicole launched her brand in 2020, during lockdown, while shielding with a new Type One Diabetes diagnosis. Seeking a creative outlet, she turned to her passion for sewing, working from her spare bedroom with a carefully curated collection of vintage fabrics. What began as a small-scale endeavour quickly grew, and today, The Fruit Moth operates from Manchester Craft & Design Centre, at the heart of the city’s thriving creative scene.
Inspired by Manchester’s rich textile heritage, Nicole honours the city’s legacy of craftsmanship and reinvention by reworking vintage and deadstock fabrics into one-of-a-kind garments. Her commitment to ethical fashion and waste reduction has led to industry recognition, including being named a 2024 Inspiring Women Awards winner in the Sustainable category. She was also invited to collaborate with Uniqlo, upcycling deadstock garments into an exclusive 70-piece collection showcased in their Tokyo store—an achievement that places her work on a global stage.
Nicole Broad is proving that fashion can be both beautiful and responsible. Through The Fruit Moth, she is not only crafting clothing designed to last but also championing a more thoughtful, sustainable future for the industry—one where quality, heritage, and individuality take precedence over mass production.
