Dr. Awan OBE began her entrepreneurial journey in the fashion industry, building the successful boutique Je T’Aime before co-founding Shere Khan in 1987. The restaurant transformed the perception of Indian dining in the UK, modernising the experience and bringing South Asian cuisine to the mainstream. Under Dr. Awan OBE’s leadership, Shere Khan expanded into a nationwide chain, setting a new benchmark for the industry and proving that heritage and ambition can work hand in hand.
Dr. Awan OBE used her business success as a springboard for social impact. Founding Suki International, she created employment opportunities for families in Bangladesh by introducing their handcrafted raffia baskets to the British market. The company’s success led to its acquisition by Interflora, where Dr. Awan OBE was invited to serve as Executive Director, embedding ethical supply chain practices and responsible business strategies at an international level.
Dr. Awan OBE has always believed that business is about people, not just profit. As a council member of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) and chair of the Ethnic Minority Business Forum (North West), she has been a relentless advocate for diversity, equity, and inclusion in business.
